Went here during a quick trip to Boston and definitely would recommend! An intimate setting, Mahaniyom presents a unique experience of thai tapas. The small plate concept allows you to try a variety of plates. Everything we tried was packed with flavor and wonderfully tasty. Would recommend the chive rice cakes, morning glory, and crab curry. Creative specials and cool twists on tradition Thai dishes. The drinks were also creative and delicious. The ambiance and vibe of the place was great for a date night or GNO.
I know everyone loves Mahaniyom... and I guess I get it? If you want a thai spot where you know the food will be solid, this is the place. My friend and I got the pad Thai and beef massaman curry, and it was a both were great, but I wasn't really blown away. We weren't wowed. We got this crispy rice appetizer though, and we loved it. It was so unique and fun to eat, while being packed full of flavor. We had great food and great service, but we didn't really think it was worth the price point.
This was my second time visiting Mahaniyom which says a lot since I like to visit new places most of the time. Oen the best Thai places in Boston. All our servers were super nice. The restaurant is cute but little small so best to make reservations before going. All the menu I tried were amazing and I don't think you could go wrong.
Service was friendly and food came out quickly once seated. Definitely recommend making a reservation for weekends - the place was packed! We had a reservation for 8:30 pm and still had to wait to be seated. Parking is street parking. Luckily for us, we were able to find a spot at that time. All the dishes are pretty solid. For starters, my favorite was the chive cake. For mains, the curries are definitely heavy on the spices so can be on the spicier side. We really enjoyed the beef and crab curries that we ordered. Pad Thai was too sweet for our taste. Fried chicken was also really good - perfectly crispy with juicy chicken.
Reservations are recommended- it was PACKED on a Friday night. They read our note on our open table reservation for a high chair and picked literally the most perfect spot for a toddler and a baby in the restaurant. We were 5 mins early and table was also ready upon arrival and that is sooo important to me, especially traveling with 2 kids under 2. I totally understand when it's not possible but completely appreciate when it feels like the restaurant prioritizes this as part of the experience. The food was so good. I wouldn't say that it was tapas portions but normal size, which turned out even better for us - leftovers! The noise level is pretty loud, music + people chatting up and having a good time. We ordered the Pad Thai, Beef Massaman, Ramboten Salad, and the Fried Chicken. The Massaman has a slight kick for my spice-sensitive foodies and definitely not a dish you can give a toddler. It was absolutely delicious and I do recommend ordering a side of rice to finish it off! My favorite would have to be the Ramboten Salad- it had a refreshing and pickled flavor profile that added acidity to our palettes for the meal. Pad Thai was great and chicken was cooked to perfection. The space is kind of small, so not recommended for large parties. I found this place out of luck from clicking on a Yelp profile who lived in the area and had reviewed another place that popped up in my search. Thankful for that! Hoping to come back when I'm in Boston and remember to make a reservation in advance!
Vibey upscale Thai tapas place tucked away in Brookline Village. I would recommend to get reservations ahead since it is a small place and can also get full even on a Monday night when we went. The menu has a range from bites, small plates to large plates/ main dishes. They also have specials for food and cocktails. Their cocktails sound interesting with asian twists but we didn't try them this time. The server recommended getting four to five dishes for a party of two since it's more tapas style. However, we only got three: two mains and one small plate and it definitely filled us up. Probably because both mains were rice dishes. The flavors were on point. Their larb with duck was my favorite - the spices really hit but it was balanced by the mint and lime. It really is addicting despite the spice. The beef panang came in second for me. The curry is rich and packed with flavors and balanced by the crunchy Thai eggplants. Bbq and crispy pork over rice was decent. It definitely could be better. The crispy pork was not crispy as I would have liked and it was cut so thin. The sauce was the star though. It could really get expensive especially if you want to try a variety. It is definitely pricier than the regular mom and pop shop and the portion is smaller. -7.2/10
Mahaniyom is a fun spot tucked away in Brookline Village, where not much else is around. When you walk in, it's a cozy little space, dimly lit. Once we sat down and ordered, we watched the bartenders tossing their cocktail shakers across the length of the bar to each other. Table service was ok, not particularly memorable. The food was generally delicious and interesting, all presented nicely. Would order again Crab curry: smooth and sweet with just a good amount of seafoody flavor, with crab meat buried within Beef massamaan: tender pieces of meat in a warm hearty sauce, executed well Grilled squid: smokey touch in pieces with great texture, well-paired sauce highlighting the seafood-ness while cutting some of the undesirable fishiness Maybe again Pork belly: great texture and tasty flavors of meat with pieces of peanuts. Personally found it too salty, even with the bowl of rice given with it. Probably not Eggplant Dip: cannot taste much of the titular ingredient, overly fishy and salty. The wide variety of vegetables were nice, though I think you can get raw vegetables elsewhere. The cocktails were not particularly reorderable - two of the three our table ordered had a very artificial, cough syrup-like sweetness without having much of the other notes listed on the menu.
Delicious, innovative Thai food in a hip, vibey dining room. We came here as a party of 3 at noon on a Saturday and were seated at the bar with no wait. The service was top-notch, with prompt fillings of our waters and a good amount of non-intrusive check-ins. Of what we got: Pad thai - although a common item, Mahaniyom does it better. This dish was the perfect amount of sweet but not too oily, and the raw bean sprouts added a refreshing crunch on the side to complement the otherwise smooth and flavorful bites. Crab curry special - absolutely delicious. We ate this dish by mixing thin vermicelli noodles in a bowl of curry with crab meat. There was a good amount of crab in the dish, and the rich, savory flavors matched the rich, creamy texture. Grilled squid special - not extra special in flavors, but done right. This dish is a whole grilled squid cut into rings, with a light, sour side sauce for dipping. Although not as overly flavorful from sauces as the other dishes we got, it was definitely cooked and seasoned well and I liked the chewy texture and focus on the squid's natural flavors. Overall, I would definitely visit again. The flavors, presentation, reasonable pricing, vibey interior, and excellent service were all top notch. This might be one of my new favorite restaurants in Brookline!
We stumbled in here on a Sunday brunch time. The portions were a little smaller/tapas style but they were packed with flavor and the 3 dishes that we got filled my husband and I up. Our favorite dish was the rambutan salad which was nice balance of sweet, salty, and acidity. We went around beginning of September so I think this dish was seasonal. Pad thai and beef massaman were also flavorful. We got a side roti to dip the curry but it ended up being a little too much carbs for us. The space is small and we ended up sitting on a counter with our seats facing the window with a nice view of people watching. The place seems good for couples or a small group(like 4) to share the dishes together.
